Navy Pier Flyover Construction: Enhancing the Lakefront Trail
Construction – What You Need To Know
- The first and second phases from Jane Adams Park, through DuSable Park and over the Ogden Slip are complete
- The third phase of construction takes place along the Chicago River Bridge and will be completed in multiple stages
- The Lakefront Trail and completed portions of the Flyover between Illinois Street and Grand Avenue will remain open for bicyclists and pedestrians
- Various lane closures will occur on Lower Lake Shore Drive to accommodate construction
- All businesses and residences will remain accessible
Construction is being done in three overlapping phases, with the first phase between Jane Addams Park and Ogden Slip, the second between the slip and the river, and the third phase improving the path over the Chicago River Bridge. The entire $60 million Flyover trail and bascule bridge rehabilitation is expected to be completed at the end of 2021.
The revised completion date of the Flyover is in response to extensive additional repairs being conducted on the Depression-era Lake Shore Drive bridge over the Chicago River. As work progressed on this phase of the project it was discovered that the bridge needed far more structural repairs than anticipated. The project had originally anticipated replacing just a few of the beams supporting the Lower Lake Shore Drive roadway, but now must replace all of these supports, which date back to the time of original construction in 1937 or the last rehabilitation in 1987. Handling these repairs now will ensure the safety of those utilizing the Flyover and the adjoining Lake Shore Drive bridge in the years to come.
